The Business of Overseas Hoops: What They Don’t Teach You
These words may sound familiar...probably because it is usually how i start my newsletter, but in the fear of sounding like a broken record...here goes. Overseas basketball is more than just playing the game. It’s a world where a handshake doesn’t mean shit, where contracts can be broken without warning, and where players can go from starters to stranded because of one bad decision or misunderstanding.
If you don’t know how to play the game off the court, you’ll end up lost in it.
The Politics of Playing Overseas
The best players don’t always get the best opportunities. If that shocks you, you haven’t been overseas long enough.
Basketball politics run deep, and if you don’t understand how things work, you’ll find yourself on the outside looking in.
Here’s what really happens behind the scenes:
The "Import Spot" Reality
Most leagues have limited roster spots for imports with the number usually one to three per team. If you take one of those spots, you better believe you’re held to a different standard.
If you’re not producing big numbers, you’re replaceable.
If a local player can do your job cheaper, you’re replaceable.
If a coach or GM suddenly doesn’t like you, you’re replaceable.
It doesn’t matter if you signed a contract. If a team wants to move on, they’ll find a way to do it, and there’s nothing you can do if you’re not prepared.
Coach & Management Politics
Sometimes, getting on a team (or staying on one) isn’t about talent. It’s about who you know and how you fit into the bigger picture.
Your agent’s connections matter-some coaches and GMs trust certain agents more than others. If your agent isn’t respected, you might never get a fair shot.
Internal team politics matter-if a local player feels threatened by your presence, they might work against you behind the scenes.
Your attitude matters-if you’re hard to coach or don’t “fit” into a team’s culture, they’ll cut you loose, no matter how good you are.
Some teams already know exactly who they want. Agents, sponsors, or higher-ups might be pulling the strings. If you’re not in the right circles, you’ll always be fighting an uphill battle.
Understanding Agents, Teams & Leagues
Most players think getting an agent means they’ll automatically get a job but that’s not how it works.
Your agent isn’t a magician. They don’t create jobs, they connect you to teams that are looking. And just like teams, agents are running a business. Some will go all out for you. Some won’t.
How Agents Really Work
Great agents do more than sign players. They build and maintain strong relationships. If your agent doesn’t have strong connections, you’re not getting the best jobs.
Some agents take on too many players. If you’re not a priority, you’ll sit on the back burner while other players get placed first.
Not all agents will fight for you when things go south. If you’re not getting paid or get cut unfairly, will your agent step up or disappear?
A good agent can get you into the right situations. A bad one can leave you stranded.
The Different Types of Overseas Leagues
Not all leagues are created equal. You might think a job is a job, but depending on where you sign, your experience could be wildly different.
Top European Leagues (EuroLeague, ACB, BSL, etc.) – Well-run, highly competitive, usually pay on time. Hard to break into without elite experience.
Mid-Tier European Leagues (France Pro B, Germany Pro A, etc.) – Solid pay but still competitive. Teams are more likely to be financially stable, but politics still play a role.
Lower European Leagues & Other Countries – More contract issues, late payments, and instability. These are often stepping-stone leagues, but they can also be dangerous for players who aren’t careful.
Some leagues will promise you the world, but if they don’t pay their players on time, none of it matters.
Why Knowledge & Connections Matter More Than Anything
If there’s one thing overseas basketball teaches you fast, it’s that the right connections can change everything.
You can be talented, but if you don’t know how to navigate the business side, you’ll keep getting passed over for guys who do.
The Importance of Reputation
Your reputation travels fast overseas. Especially if you:
Show up on time and handle your business, teams will respect you.
Act entitled, cause problems, or quit too easily, word will spread and your next job will be even harder to find.
How to Stay in the Right Circles
Stay in touch with former teammates, coaches, and GMs. Your next job might come from someone you played with or worked under.
Be active in overseas basketball networks. If you’re invisible, teams will forget about you.
Use social media strategically. Teams and agents watch everything so if you’re constantly complaining online, it’s a bad look.
Learning from Players Who’ve Been Through It
One of the biggest mistakes overseas players make is trying to figure it out alone. You don’t need to learn everything the hard way plenty of guys have already been through the fire.
