Beyond Comparison
We Love to Compare
As sports fans, we have an obsession with comparisons. Who’s the GOAT...Jordan or LeBron? Is Messi truly better than Maradona? We debate eras, stats, and styles like we’re arguing serious shit. But this tendency to compare doesn’t stop at sports. It extends into our personal lives. How often have you caught yourself comparing today’s parenting styles to how you were raised? Or wondering if things were simpler “back in the day”?
While comparisons can be fun and even thought-provoking, they often fail to capture one essential truth. Which is life is always evolving. What worked in one era might not work in another. The change of pace can make you nuts, and adapting to it is one of the most critical skills we can develop...especially overseas, where change is a constant companion.
Evolving to Survive
Adaptation is survival...whether on the court, or in life. Overseas, the ability to evolve is tested every single day. One season, you’re adjusting to the slow-paced, physical style of a European league. The next, you’re adapting to the fast, high-scoring games of an Asian league. And it's not just the style of play...it’s the customs, the food, the language, and the way people interact. You can’t compare each stop on your journey to the last. You have to meet the moment, or you’ll be left behind.
Adapting doesn’t mean abandoning who you are or where you’ve come from. It means expanding your "repetoir". Understanding that what worked in Poland may not fly in China, and what got you through last season might not help you succeed this season. The more you understand change, the more you grow as an athlete and as a person.
Breaking the Comparison Trap
Comparing eras or methods is a natural human instinct. It makes us feel connected to the past, and gives us what I call “success barometers”. But overseas athletes know better than anyone that living in comparison mode is a losing game. Each league and each culture offers its own challenges and opportunities. If you’re too focused on comparing your current situation to your idealized version of the past, you’ll miss out on what’s right in front of you.
Adapting requires letting go of your comparing instinct and instead focus on what’s needed now. How do you build relationships when you don’t speak the language? How do you adjust to officiating that is very corrupt and favors certain teams? How do you evolve when you’re constantly uprooted? These are the questions that define your success overseas.
Learning the Art of Adaptation
So how do you adapt? First, by recognizing that change is inevitable. No one plays the same game forever, and no team stays together as long as you’d like. The sooner you accept that, the sooner you can prepare yourself for what’s next. Here are a few key strategies:
Stay Curious
When you’re overseas, curiosity is your best friend. Ask questions about the culture, learn the language (even just a few phrases), and immerse yourself in local traditions. The more you know, the easier it is to adapt.
Stay Open-Minded
Not everything will make sense to you right away. Customs and rules may feel weird as hell, but that doesn’t mean they’re wrong. Embrace the differences rather than fighting them.
Build Relationships
Whether it’s with teammates, coaches, or locals, relationships help you bridge the gap between what you know and what you’re learning. A teammate who’s been there longer might have invaluable advice for adjusting to your new environment.
Be Resilient
Adapting isn’t always smooth. There will be moments when you feel frustrated, homesick, or misunderstood. Recognize these as part of the process and keep pushing forward.
The Bigger Picture
Adapting is a life skill, preparing for life’s inevitable changes. Whether it’s transitioning to a new career after your playing days are over or raising kids in a world vastly different from the one you grew up in, adaptation is a lifelong skill. The more you practice it, the more prepared you’ll be for whatever comes your way.
Please leave the comparisons behind. Instead of asking how today’s game stacks up to yesterday’s, let’s ask how we can meet the challenges of today and prepare for tomorrow. Because while the past is a great teacher, the future belongs to those who can adapt.
Cheers to the journey and the growth that comes with it.
