Best Rookie Spots in Overseas Hoops
Get In, Get Paid, Get Better
Not All First Stops Are Created Equal
One of the hardest aspects of overseas basketball is that rookie year. Rookie year overseas is chaotic and tricky. You’re not gonna get a six-figure contract with a Benz and an apartment with a rooftop jacuzzi. But you shouldn't have to settle for getting paid in smiles and strawberry uncrustables, even if that’s literally what I’m eating right now.
There are good rookie spots. Places where you can actually play, get paid on time, and build your resume without needing months of therapy after.
We’re breaking down the best entry points in the game, countries where rookies can win, grow, and still have a decent shot at moving up.
1. Portugal: LPB
Why It Works: They love American guards and wings. The level is competitive, the fans are chill, and the lifestyle is smooth. Good weather, solid paychecks, and a league that doesn’t try to chew up and spit out rookies for fun.
Watch Out For: Some clubs still play the “late payment” game, but not as often as in Eastern Europe.
2. Australia / NBL1 League: NBL1 (not NBL, different levels)
Why It Works: Everyone speaks English. You get stats. You get film. You get a real shot to live well and grow your game. And if you crush it, it’s a pipeline to higher-level leagues in Australia, New Zealand, or even Asia.
Watch Out For: The season is short. You’ll need a second gig lined up for the other half of the year.
3. Finland: Korisliiga
Why It Works: They bring in a lot of Americans and let them do their thing. You’ll get touches, minutes and you’ll definitely get better. And they usually pay on time.
Watch Out For: It’s cold as hell. Bring layers. And defintely come home with a husky...or a wolf.
4. Georgia: Georgian Superleague
Why It Works: Low pressure. Good starting money. You can put up huge numbers here. If you’re trying to boost your stats and move up, this is one of the easiest spots to do it.
Watch Out For: Sometimes the living situations are a little suspect. Get pics before you sign anything.
5. Luxembourg: Luxembourg Basketball League
Why It Works: You’ll be the man. You’ll score 30 a night. It’s a stat-padding dream that gets you film and confidence. Plus, a lot of Americans use this as a jumoing pad to France or Belgium.
Watch Out For: Small market, low exposure. It’s great for stepping stones, but don’t get stuck.
6. Colombia / Latin America Tour Leagues
Why It Works: These leagues have short seasons but are always looking for scorers. They pay in full upfront sometimes. You can rack up multiple short-term contracts in one year and keep the income flowing.
Watch Out For: You’re often on your own. No translator. No staff. Just you, your bag, and your jumper.
