You Won the Algorithm...Now What?
I’m not trying to end the week getting you in your feelings, but there’s a sad truth every athlete eventually faces…the algorithm forgets you.
Not in a bitter, key-your-car kind of way. More like a ‘new number, who this?’ situation.
That’s what happens when you live in the world of overseas sports. You dominate in Poland or Turkey or Greece. The fans love you. Your follower count jumps. Your DMs go off. You’re the flavor of the month.
But the problem is…the flavor changes.
A new player signs, they’re posting daily and just like that, your page is last week’s leftovers.
Social Media Is a Tool, Not a Foundation
Don’t get it twisted. Social media is important.
But the part no one wants to say out loud is that if you’re relying only on social media to build your career, you’re building your brand on a shitty foundation.
The algorithm can love you for a season and then bury you under some 6’8” kid from Cleveland who just did an insane 720 dunk in France. That’s how it works. And if your whole plan is “go viral and hope something sticks,” you’re going to end up wondering why nothing lasts.
I’ve unfortunately seen it firsthand. Players with 35K followers, verified, reposted by Bleacher Report…and then two years later they can’t get a contract. Can’t get a brand deal. Can’t even get a return call from a podcast they were once on.
You don’t control who sees your post. You don’t control what gets shown. What you can control is who actually knows you…and who’s willing to pick up the phone when the season ends.
The Trap of Temporary Fame
Indulge me…Let’s say you had a huge year in Italy and became a fan favorite. Maybe you averaged 22 and 9, hit a buzzer beater or two, started signing babies at the grocery store.
Amazing.
But now you’re in Lithuania in a new city and a new team and new fans.
And while you’re introducing yourself to this country, the old fans from Italy are moving on. They’re reposting clips of your replacement. They’re following the team’s new import.
And now you start chasing that feeling again. Posting more content and checking views hoping your new fans keep you relevant.
You forget the bigger play, which was never about followers, but who of those followers remain when you build your professional network.
What Good Is a Fanbase You’ll Never Meet?
Let me ask you something. You have 100K followers…which is honestly amazing.
But how many of them can help you get a job back home?
How many of them are going to connect you with a team when your contract runs out?
How many are going to open doors for your post-career goals?
Sponsor a camp? Invest in a brand you’re launching? Bring you in for a paid speaking gig?
Probably not many. And that’s the difference between building a following and building a network. A following wants content, while a network wants connection.
Are You Strengthening the Right Network?
You spend all your time overseas grinding while trying to build your name. But ask yourself, are you building anything that lasts when the season ends?
Your old teammates…where are they now?
Your coaches back home…do they still check in?
That brand rep you met at the summer pro-am…did you follow up?
Too many athletes treat networking like it’s only necessary AFTER their career ends. But by then, it’s too late. The real ones build while they’re still playing laying the bricks for what’s next.
If your whole circle is fans from your last team, then your circle resets every time you change jerseys. Build where you are, absolutely! But build where you’re going, too.
OverseasX Was Built for This Exact Reason
That’s why I built OverseasX. Because I’ve lived this life. Played in a dozen countries, had fans chant my name one season and forget me the next.
I’ve been followed, reposted, cheered for and I’ve also been ghosted, cut, and stuck home with no plan. So I built something I wish existed when I was still playing.
OverseasX is the space between your game and your future.
It’s a community of athletes, brands, experts, and professionals who are tired of temporary.
People who understand the grind of overseas life and are building long-term plays that actually matter.
No more waiting to be remembered by the algorithm. No more crossing your fingers hoping a post goes viral.
Instead, you’re building relationships. Creating value. Learning from others who’ve done it. And finding ways to monetize your identity, not just your jumper.
Final Thought
Eventually, they stop clapping.
Eventually, your name stops trending.
Eventually, the next guy comes along and the camera shifts.
And if all you’ve built is social clout…you’ll feel it.
But if you’ve built a real network you’ll transition smoother and land softer.
So yeah…post your workouts, share the highlights and engage your fans...just don’t forget to do the work offline too. Join the community that remembers you long after the lights go off.
Because the algorithm might forget you, but the right network never will.
Cheers, Kevin
