When the House Wins, You Lose
Let’s talk about something that’s pretty uncomfortable.
Athletes…especially young ones…are getting eaten alive. Not by the actual system, but by the shiny shit around it. Like gambling, fake investments, or predatory partnerships, and…unfortunately, stupidity. And most of the time, no one steps in until it’s too late.
I'm sure you saw the Malik Beasley headlines about gambling and garnished wages. His dentist and barber are collecting checks off his NBA salary. A player who made legit millions, is now being held together by duct tape and tax liens. And to make it somehow worse…there’s a federal investigation into whether he was betting on NBA games.
But, kind of WTF…The league is married to FanDuel and DraftKings and all the other sports betting platforms pumping adrenaline into fans’ veins every timeout. And they’re throwing those same platforms in players’ faces with commercials every five minutes, bonus codes and risk-free bets.
Meanwhile, who’s actually talking to the players about what happens if “risk-free” turns into “life fucked”?
Nobody. At least nobody in the overseas world.
There’s this false sense of security when you make money young like you’re untouchable or like that next contract is guaranteed. It’s all just play money…until it isn’t.
Gambling feels like control. Like you’re winning without lacing up. But the house always wins. And if the people around you are talking parlays, they’re not helping you at all. They’re making money off your ignorance.
It’s all messed up. The machine hands you the grenade and dares you to pull the pin. Then when it blows up, you’re the cautionary tale, a blurb on the ESPN bottom ticker.
I love the phrase they throw around…“bet responsibly.” But no one’s teaching you how to earn responsibly. There are better ways to make money. Learn how to invest or start building something. Start a brand, or be part of a real community that actually gives a shit about your future, not your followers.
You want a rush? Build something that lasts. You want quick cash? Sell something you believe in. Use your name, your story, your grind. Not a 7-leg parlay with odds that’ll make you cry.
Athletes need a playbook for life off the court, not just highlights. And if no one’s handing you that playbook, go find it. Because if you don’t, the house will write the ending for you.
And trust me…their version never ends well.
