When “Giving Back” Becomes Getting Used

I was always raised to believe in giving back.

You help where you can, donate your time and step up to volunteer for things that don’t show up on a resume. You make yourself available…not for money, but for the good of the world.

And for a long time, that was the mantra.

Back in the D-League, I was that guy who they always came to when a community service opportunity popped up. Hospital visits, reading to kids, food drives…I did it all. If it meant showing up and representing the team with a smile, I was there. I didn’t care if it paid or not. I just did it. That was the expectation…and it felt right.

I was raised to think that you measure a man by how he behaves when no one is watching. And honestly, I still believe in that. That’s the part that pisses me off the most. Because now I look back at the last few years and realize just how much of my time I gave away…and how many people were more than happy to take it.

The Free Coach Nobody Paid Attention To

In the past two years alone, I coached four different basketball teams. All for free. All with the understanding that I was “giving back.”

“You’re gonna get noticed.”

“This is good for your brand.”

“These connections will open doors.”

What actually happened was I gave up my evenings and weekends while trying to build a company and be a present father and husband. And when I needed a favor back? Silence.

If someone asks you to do something for free…especially when they know you’re grinding hard, it better be crystal fucking clear what the trade-off is. If they’re selling you on vague “exposure” or “future opportunities,” that’s your cue to bounce.

Because what I’ve learned is that predators love volunteers.

The Business World Will Smile While Bleeding You Dry

This is not the world I grew up in. Back then, people helped because they saw your heart. Now, they help themselves to your time, your energy, and your name…and call it a “partnership.”

I’ve sat on more “intro calls” than I can count. Business people with shiny decks, big talk, no contracts. They love what I bring to the table. They see the vision. But when it’s time to talk about compensation? That’s when it gets foggy.

“We’re a startup…”

“We’re building something special…”

“You’d be a great face for this…”

Let me translate that:

They want your NIL, your network, your story…but they don’t want to pay for it.

And if you push back?

“You should be grateful to be part of something like this.”

It’s wild. They’ll have you on three Zooms a week just to “build synergy,” and the whole time, they’re pulling from your playbook, using your credibility to pitch others, and making moves with your value while you sit there unpaid.

That’s not volunteering. That’s being hustled.

Even Your Friends Will Get Comfortable Taking From You

Here’s where it gets super frustrating. It’s not just random LinkedIn folks trying to run game. Sometimes it’s your own people.

A friendly coach hits you up to coach a clinic. You think, “I got you.”

You rearrange your life, skip time with your kids, burn gas money, and walk into a gym ready to give back. Because they asked, and you’re loyal.

But when you need something, they’re a ghost.

That’s what stings the most. Because we were raised on team. On brotherhood. So when that breaks? It messes with your head. You start questioning who’s real and who’s just watching your value rise without lifting a finger to help you keep climbing.

So What’s Your Time Worth?

That’s the question I’ve been wrestling with. Not in an ego way. In a survival way.

Because time is currency. And if you’re out here giving it away, you better be damn sure the people cashing in on it deserve it.

We’ve entered a world where a handshake doesn’t mean commitment, and a smile doesn’t mean respect. Everyone wants a piece of your energy…but nobody wants to pay the price for it.

It’s not bitter, it’s honest.

You can’t keep volunteering yourself into burnout. You can’t keep coaching for free while the guy running the camp is pocketing thousands. You can’t keep lending your name to someone’s “startup” just because they said the right buzzwords.

Your time is your worth and your worth should be protected.

That’s Why We Built OverseasX

Here’s where the turn happened. Not to pitch, to explain.

I built OverseasX because I got tired of watching good athletes and good people get used. Tired of seeing pros give away years of value for “experience.” Tired of hearing horror stories from players who joined a shady partnership, got sold on fake opportunities, or had their stories co-opted by people who never touched a court overseas.

At OverseasX, we vet everyone. No scammers or time-wasters.

We built a space where your value is seen immediately. You’re a real person with a real journey. And if you’ve played overseas, you’ve been through some shit that makes you wise beyond any degree. That means something here.

The past few years have been a grind. Divorce. Financial setbacks. Wrestling with self-worth.

But I kept building.

Because I believe that the next generation of overseas athletes shouldn’t have to eat the same losses we did. You shouldn’t have to learn the hard way who’s full of it and who’s got your back.

Paid Communities > Fake Networks

You know what scammers really hate? A paywall.

Why? Because it takes effort and accountability.

At OverseasX, you pay to get in…but that’s not the point. The point is, so does everyone else. And that means the room you walk into is filled with people who are serious.

We don’t have time for fake brands, pretend agents, or vague “mentors” who just want your engagement metrics.

We’ve built a place where you can ask real questions. Talk about your real struggles. And get help from people who’ve been in your shoes…and are still lacing them up.

Final Thought...Trust, But Don’t Be a Fool

I’ll never stop believing in giving back. But I’ve learned to protect my energy. Because the truth is, if you don’t put a price on your time…someone else will happily mark it as “free.”

We’re building a new system. One rooted in respect, experience, and reciprocity. If you’re done being the one who gets called only when they need something…

If you’re done giving your whole heart to people who forget your name when the lights are off…If you’re ready to join something real…we got a spot for you.

Welcome to OverseasX.
