What If That Was Your Last Season?

I don’t mean to get all dramatic on a random Friday, but what if this past season was your last?

Not because you wanted it to be, or because you had some grand plan to walk away on your terms.

But just because…your time has come.

You head home thinking, I’ll rest up. Regroup. Something will come. But then weeks go by. And then months. And every time your phone buzzes, you hope it’s an agent. Or a scout. Or a team you played against that saw something in you.

And it’s never them.

Instead, it’s your friend tagging you in some lame video. Or a relative asking if you’re going to “get a real job now.” Or your mom wondering if you still want her to hold onto your old trophies.

And that’s when it hits…maybe you already played your last game and didn’t even know it.

No one prepares you for that.

It might not have the Hollywood ending, with a jersey swap and a standing ovation.

Just…quietly. An unplanned ending. The final game you didn’t know was your final game.

We spend our entire careers planning for the next contract. The next opportunity. The next flight out. You’re always trying to stay ready, working out in half-empty gyms, shooting alone while your body screams for rest, chasing the idea that you still got something to prove.

You think if you just stay in shape, stay professional, stay visible...someone will reach out.

But that’s the trap. Because while you’re locked in on staying ready, no one’s helping you get ready, for what comes after. For the possibility that the calls stop. That the offers dry up. That the game keeps moving…without you.

I’ve lived this. I’ve been that guy who thought the next deal was coming. Who thought, “nah, I’m too good to be done.” I’ve had that long-ass summer where you refresh Eurobasket ten times a day and start wondering if you should go coach high school or apply to be a substitute teacher. I’ve looked around at my boys moving on and felt stuck as hell.

And yeah, maybe you do get one more contract. Maybe you go back for another season. Or two. Or five.

But eventually, it ends. Whether you’re ready or not.

And if you are unprepared, that’s when the real shit starts. The regret. The doubt. The “why didn’t I…” thoughts.

Why didn’t I start something while I was still playing?

Why didn’t I save more when I had checks coming in?

Why didn’t I use that offseason to prepare for what’s next instead of just trying to stay in shape and hope for the best?

We all do it. I’ve done it.

That’s why I built OverseasX. For the after. For the questions that come when your jersey’s hanging on the wall, and you’re not sure if it’s ever coming out again.

Whether you play another five years or never touch the court again, you need something that’s yours. Something that doesn't vanish when the team folds or the coach goes in a different direction.

So maybe that last season wasn't your last. But if it was, what would you wish you’d done differently?

And more importantly, what can you still do right now?

So if you’re sitting at home wondering what’s next… Wondering if that was your last season... You’re not weak. You’re not lost. You’re just in the part they never told us about.

And you don’t have to go through it alone.
