The Grind Comes Home in TBT (The Basketball Tournament

Every summer, like bad sunburn, there’s this weird, beautiful migration that happens in the basketball world.

You’ll be walking through an airport in Philly or Atlanta or O’Hare and you see him…that dude you remember from the NCAA Tournament, hauling two giant duffel bags, rocking a Fenerbahce hoodie and beat-up slides. Maybe he just wrapped a season in Lithuania or Turkey or was getting numbers in a village in Spain. But now he’s home. And he’s got one thing on his mind:

TBT better known as, The Basketball Tournament.

With a one million dollar winner takes all prize.

It’s a summer spectacle. And for overseas pros, it’s one of the best ways to stay sharp, get seen, and remind the world you’ve still got it.

A Summer Stage for the Overseas Hustle

For most NARPs, TBT is a fun little experience on ESPN watching ex-college stars run it back in front of packed gyms of alumni and fans.

But for those on the court…especially the ones who spent the last ten months playing in towns most never heard of while eating a steady diet of falafel…TBT is a great opportunity.

It’s the one time a year they don’t need to translate their plays or explain why they strapped seven stacks to their body in the flight home. They’re back on home soil, playing in their own language, in front of friends and family.

And they show the fuck out.

Some of the most slept-on basketball in the world is being played by overseas pros, and TBT puts that front and center. Guys who’ve been dominating in Israel, France, Serbia, Colombia, or China putting on a show. Dunking on former NBA players, while dropping 30 on national TV wearing the college colors.

And there is no bullshit.

No politics or agents playing puppet master, or fake hustle.

Just competition.

My Almost-TBT Moment

When I was near the end of my career, I was asked to put together a team for the TBT. The idea was to build a team of alumni from Camden Catholic, which, if you know Jersey ball, you know about this historic program. Owner of several state titles and many D1 athletes…including yours truly.

The idea peaked my interest. I started calling guys and lining up a squad that could make some noise.

But then, a sad plot twist, the guy I was working with unexpectedly passed away. And the air kind of went out of the whole endeavor.

Nonetheless, I kept watching as the tournament kept growing in the following years. New teams kept popping up with alumni squads from schools like Syracuse, Ohio State and Marquette. Random collections of overseas guys kept showing up. It turned into this beautiful chaos where old teammates reunited and dudes with something to prove showed up and proved it.

Even though I never got the chance to run with my Camden Catholic squad in TBT, I look at what it’s become and I fucking love it. It’s everything I believe in when it comes to overseas ball…earn your way in…stay in shape and be ready when the lights come on.

More Than a Million

Yes, prize money is extremely sexy…like a million dollars, split between the team, the staff, the coaches, and usually some random super fans who picked the bracket right, sexy. But the value of TBT for overseas athletes is in the exposure.

It’s in that little window of summer where all the politics disappear and it’s put up or shut up.

Some dudes go into TBT unsigned and walk out with a job overseas. Others go in already locked into contracts but use the tournament to stay sharp, shake off rust, or just flex a little before heading back across the ocean. It’s a reunion, a recruiting fair, and a war zone all in one.

And for guys ending their careers, like I was, it’s a chance to say goodbye on your own terms.

Not in some crumbling gym in Eastern Europe with twelve fans and unpaid pay checks…

But in front of the people who matter, with cameras rolling, while playing the game that shaped your life.

Final Thought: Get in the Game

If you’re a player sitting at home wondering what’s next, here’s my message:

Get off the fucking internet and get on the court.

The TBT is a way to show the world what you’ve been doing overseas all these years. To remind everyone that pro hoops exists beyond the NBA. And to write your own chapter… maybe one more time.

TBT Season is here.

Don’t just watch it…find a way to be in it.
