Something’s Brewing in Europe

The moves happening behind the scenes right now could change everything for players, clubs, and the future of international hoops.

There’s something devious happening in overseas basketball right now. You hear it in hallways before anyone dares to name it. That quick nod or awkward smile. That distinct owner look we all know…the one that says “everything’s fine” while the budget’s bleeding out. We are initiated. We read eyes for a living. “We’ll see what happens next year” sounds like “call your agent dipshit.” That’s EuroLeague at the moment. Night-before-a-breakup vibes without the courtesy text. Everyone knows what is coming, but nobody wants to be the first to say it.

I’ve lived inside enough rumor mills to smell when shit is changing. Overseas sports run on secrets until the money shows up. Right now the whispers are pointing in one direction…the NBA is circling Europe and FIBA is listening. EuroLeague called the NBA’s European project a “threat”…which is not exactly welcoming.

Here’s the facts without all the bullshit fake drama. The NBA and FIBA have been mapping a 16 team league for Europe…a semi open thing with permanent clubs and a few qualifying spots. That plan has been described in multiple places. The NBA’s own people keep saying the intent is not to replace EuroLeague, but to build a commercially stronger product in Europe with a cleaner structure and that magic fucking word, stability.

EuroLeague is not standing still. They added teams for 2025 to 2026…jumping from 18 to 20. They embraced Dubai and lined up Abu Dhabi’s tourism arm and Etihad as main partners. They are not fucking around…they are fortifying their walls.

And clubs are reading the room. ALBA Berlin already stepped out of EuroLeague and is playing the long game in another direction while talking openly about NBA Europe being a target in the next few years. ASVEL, whose majority owner is a guy you may have heard of named Tony Parker, is now reported to be preparing for life after its EuroLeague license ends in 2026. This is not random bullshit. It is getting printed by reputable outlets in Germany and by the European basketball press.

So when you hear “this is our last year in EuroLeague”…you are not crazy.

What is the NBA really selling you ask? In a word…predictability. Fewer moving parts, permanent spots for anchor clubs. A calendar that broadcasters can rely on. The phrase “commercially viable” has come up multiple times. That matters when you are a club president staring at red ink after a long road trip and three injuries to the rotation.

A lot of European clubs play elite basketball while fighting a constant money leak. EuroLeague has prestige, history and rivalries, but the model is hard. Travel costs suck, revenue is very unreliable and can drastically change from year to year. The NBA’s pitch is simple…come get stabilization and money bitches!!

Euroleague still owns the culture, the rivalries, the crowds and all that smoke that hangs over the court when someone hits a shot with one minute left and the whole section light up flares while losing their fucking minds. That culture is the product. If the NBA walks in with money and rules and perfect TV contracts, you risk cleaning house and washing away what made the place special in the first place.

EuroLeague knows this…which is why they are trying to look bigger, richer and safer,  all while keeping the things fans love. The Final Four in Abu Dhabi last season was a statement that they don’t need NBA money..

Which has players asking all the familiar questions like: Will the checks clear on time? That’s the question hanging over every overseas locker room. Athletes want to know if the new system will actually protect them or just reshuffle the same shit with a shiny new logo. Where will the best players land? Which leagues will still pay on time? Which ones will disappear by Christmas? Everyone’s trying to figure out what path keeps them visible, because getting seen is the one thing that holds true value overseas.

If the big leagues go franchise heavy, the funnel gets smaller, meaning less movement, fewer open spots, and the same names circulating. Keep the qualifiers, and you keep hope alive…some random team in Turkey or Lithuania can still crash the party. The new 12-plus-4 format everyone’s whispering about is supposed to split the difference. But somebody’s getting cut out no matter how they spin it.

So what happened next? Well for the short term, EuroLeague runs with 20 and pushes its commercial plan hard. NBA and FIBA keep moving their pieces…with 2027 showing up again and again as a realistic launch window for an NBA Europe league. Teams with expiring EuroLeague deals flirt.  A few will quietly make their decision before anyone posts the graphic.

Medium term…if two or three brand clubs jump, the center of gravity shifts. The rest will choose identity or stability. Some will chase the NBA project. Some will double down on EuroLeague tradition. Some will slide toward the FIBA Champions League and keep the lights on while waiting to see who guessed right. The ALBA and ASVEL signals are your tell.

So what’s the opinion of someone like me with miles on the odometer…I think this ends with two strong products instead of one…and a messy in-between period that makes everyone super pissed. The NBA does TV better than anyone. They can package European clubs for a global audience in a way that unlocks value. EuroLeague can protect its identity and still grow if it keeps leaning into what only it can do…creating atmospheres that feel like life or death.

And yes…some execs are already telling people this is the last dance under the old banner. It is the exact shit people say behind closed doors before a press conference turns it into truth.

If I sound blunt, it’s because overseas ball knocks the shit out of you. You learn which smiles mean business and which ones mean the money’s not coming this week. You sleep on buses that never seem to stop, walk into the wrong rooms in the wrong cities, and figure out what’s real before the meeting even starts. After enough of that, you start recognizing the poker tells which let you know what’s next.

That instinct has kept a lot of us safe out there. And if all this change brings stability? I’m for it. Because stability and money…the two things everyone talks about but rarely see together overseas…are what players have been chasing forever.
