Some of you are going to read this and think I’m being dramatic…which I probably am. But anyone who has played overseas long enough knows there is something different that happens over there. Something that is hard to prove but easy to turn into a conspiracy theorist. Overseas officiating gets shady enough that an American can never truly know if it was a bad call or some bullshit.
Most of us stay quiet about it because the second you say shit out loud you sound like the entitled American blaming everyone but himself. But why is Partizan, one of the biggest European clubs, putting out statements asking for protection and equal conditions and literally pointing out specific plays.
And…I;m listening. I mean, 31 free throws to 5 against Olympiacos is absurd. That variance is not normal. So when a club like that says we need independent officiating reviews, they are really saying, we do not trust how the games are being run and we want some sort of accountability.
And if you are an American just starting out, you may want to listen. Overseas basketball is tied to money in a way we have not seen in the States…which sounds CRAZY in this current climate. Over there you deal with more financial pitfalls with promotions and relegations. Gambling, which we’ve discussed recently, is rampant overseas. Pair that with bullshit local politics, club presidents who know the mayor and coaches who grew up with the head of officials and here we are. The refs are not sitting in church with their hands folded…they are interacting with these people. And you show up as an American expecting neutrality…well, that’s not always the case.
One of our community members and current pro, Eugene Campbell sent me a clip recently. He told me, “In Malta, locals purposely try to hurt Americans when they can’t guard them, and coaches are in on it.” And he wasn’t being paranoid. I watched the play and it was dirty as hell. And I have seen that exact play in my travels. When a guy forcefully slides under your feet on a jumper, or hip checks you into the stands when you are in the air. That’s the bullshit we deal with, because a lot of locals know some referees will let it slide when a domestic does it to the American. They know the American will get the tech if he reacts and will be told to calm down and stop making a scene. Meanwhile the aggressor will maintain their faux innocence, approaching you and the ref with palms out, talking fast like they’re calmly explaining the accident that just took place.
So what the hell is that? Is it corruption or just cultural? That is the frustrating part. You do not always know, but you can feel it. You can tell when the offensive foul is already in the ref’s mouth because you have 25 and they need to slow you down. But was it ordered? Or was it a ref who knows the club president? When that question lives rent free in your head every week that trust is gone.
Partizan getting 5 free throws while the other team gets 31 is what some Americans see in these smaller leagues. They are not asking for favoritism, they just want consistency. Because when a club spends tons of money, fills arenas, brings in NBA level guys and still feels like the game is unfair…it’s probably true
For Americans, you get judged on numbers and wins. If the officiating swings three close games out of your favor, then your agent may be looking for a new situation for you. Your entire career season can get derailed because two or three randos with whistles were either incompetent or compromised.
That is why what Eugene said needs to be heard. Locals know who the dominant Americans are. They see you getting paid to hoop while some of them are working a day job and playing at night. So when they can bump you, clip you, throw something extra and the refs ignore it… they do it. Because it evens things out without having to actually guard you.
And before I get referees pissed at me, let me clarify…this is obviously not all refs. I have had some great ones overseas. I have seen crews walk in and you relax because you know this is going to be an actual game. You know they will let both sides be physical. Those refs exist. But they are not the ones you remember when you are replaying the fourth quarter of a game that got you fired, in your head.
What Partizan is asking for is actually quite simple. Stop bullshitting! Review it and hold them accountable. Make it harder for those corrupt moments that destroy the integrity of the game. Because right now players and clubs are noticing. And nothing makes a league lose credibility faster than everyone thinking the results are manipulated.
Here is what I would love to see…players sending clips like Eugene did. Not to whine, but to document and say this is happening. Because if everyone keeps it private, the only voice that gets heard is the federation press release. And those stories will always say the same thing. Human error/Game management/Blah Blah Blah…then moving on.
This can alter a career and Americans need to stop pretending they are crazy for noticing.
