It’s absolutely awful that I even have to write this. I literally just spent a week talking about how hard it is to stay sane once you retire from pro sports and now this. Shows how fast life can turn when your entire identity is wrapped into being an athlete and suddenly you are staring at a mistake you do not know how to live with.

This is what happens when the system treats support like some bullshit checklist, instead of the collision of ego, identity and panic. A 24 year old who just scored in the NFL, on the DALLAS FUCKING COWBOYS in one bad night decides, I can’t come back from this. His mind could not picture a version of himself on the other side of this mistake.

We keep throwing out bullshit statements and grief counselor, but we don’t actually talk about the part where athletes build this enormous version of themselves and then get trapped inside it. Now a wrong headline and it feels like the Batman mask is ripped off in front of everybody leaving you exposed. If no one is there in that exact hour to say, “you can recover from this” the ego will make a permanent decision to avoid temporary setback. That is what we have to fix.
