Investing Beyond the Game
Playing overseas, many athletes unknowingly leave their future wealth on the bench by letting their savings sit in standard checking or saving accounts.
Idle Cash vs. Compound Growth
When you keep all your earnings in a traditional bank account, you aren't just missing out- you’re losing value to inflation. 1000$ today barely compounded over 5 years is worth much less than it would be if it were in a different account. Traditional banks offer near-zero interest, meaning your salary loses purchasing power every year in those accounts.
Compounding is the real-time growth you see when your money works for you. By choosing to invest early, you avoid missing on out a strong savings fund that works for you.
Diversifying for Long-Term Growth
In order to build lasting wealth, you must prioritize diversified investments. This allows you to build a financial backbone that supports you long after you finish your career.
Low-Cost Index Funds: Instead of picking individual stocks, invest in the entire market (like a benchmark such as the S&P 500 or DOW). This spreads your risk and historically provides consistent returns year over year.
Dividend funds: A great way to have your money work for you is with dividend stocks or funds. Dividend-paying stocks or Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) can provide a steady stream of passive income during the months you aren't receiving a team paycheck. However, these may only be worth it with a significant amount of money in them, as you won’t receive dividends that really make a difference.
Tax-Advantaged Accounts: If you are a U.S. citizen, maximize contributions to a Roth IRA. Since your overseas income may be excluded from U.S. tax (up to certain limits), your investments can grow and be withdrawn tax-free in retirement. $7500 a year (max amount) every year in a roth-IRA will be more than enough for a retirement fund when you reach that age.
Individual Stocks/Narrow ETFs: While these may be the most risky options, researching and investing part of your salary in smaller/individual companies and funds can have massive returns over time. While I wouldn’t dedicate more than 30-40% of your salary into these, there are some great individual equities out there.
Personally, I am involved in NVDA, AMD, LLY, AVGO, and VUG (tech ETF). Reminder: this is not saying these stocks will do well over time, especially with the current AI market, but are definitely good options to look into. If you have any questions about my reasoning, please reach out.
Useful Platforms for Overseas Athletes
To keep more of your returns, use platforms designed for low fees and accessibility from abroad:
Charles Schwab: Their High Yield Investor Checking account is a favorite for expats and athletes because it offers a linked brokerage account and refunds all ATM fees worldwide.
Yahoo Finance: A great website/app to track your portfolio, market news, and individual stocks.
The Impact
Ignoring your investment potential can cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars in long-term growth. By automating your investments now, you aren't just saving money; you're ensuring that when your playing days end, your financial security is just beginning.
